politics as (un)usual

I was enjoying a ride through the lush farmland along NC 87 in Chatham County this morning when I saw a "Mike Cross for Commissioner" sign.

Sometimes, singing protest songs is not enough. You have to seize the reins of political power.

Now, if you’re familiar with the comical songs of that gifted Tar Heel troubadour, Mike Cross, then you might wonder why I describe him as a protest singer. But I’d like to think that a whacked-out sense of humor is one of the most effective forms of dissent.

Although I know the music of Mike Cross, I don’t know his stand on the issues, much less his political affiliation. Back in the 1970s, when he was at the top of the Chapel Hill musical heap, Mike Cross sure looked like a Democrat:

Then, when I saw him in concert last year, he looked a lot more like a Republican:

That’s true, in general, for "PEOPLE OF A CERTAIN AGE." Back in the 1970s, we ALL looked like Democrats:

But given the passage of 35 years, we "PEOPLE OF A CERTAIN AGE" all look a lot more like Republicans:

Life is SO damned confusing!

I can’t tell you anything more about the political fortunes of Mike Cross, how he fared in the primary, or whether he’s still in the running for the general election. No matter how his campaign turns out, if I know Mike Cross, he’ll manage to get a song out of it.

Heck, I managed to get a story out of it.
