Lost Archives

It's disappointing to log on to an old favorite, a huge collection of Tennessee Valley Authority photos...and find them missing.

Here's the site, but the photos don't load anymore:
http://narademo.umiacs.umd.edu/cgi-bin/isadg/viewseries.pl?seriesid=978

Maybe someday the National Archives will get the whole collection of 120,000 Federal ("EAP") historic photos back online again. It was awesome. Fortunately, I had already downloaded a few like these:

From the Kodak Negative File, record group 142, Tennessee Valley Authority, National Archives

Sylva Electric Light and Power Company on the Tuckaseegee River

Smoky Mountain Power Company on the Oconaluftee River

Sylva paperboard company

Armour Tannery on Scott’s Creek

A very informative technical paper- http://www.umiacs.umd.edu/~joseph/nara-image-collection.pdf - explains what was involved in getting all those photos online. Why they're gone, I don't know.

SAVE THE DILLSBORO POWERHOUSE!

Duke may get the dam but save our Powerhouse. Imagine what a delightful place for the community to renovate sustainably and use for an environmental organization as a center for environmental studies or such. This could be a wonderful project for WCU's Construction, Engineering, Design and Earth Sciences departments colloborating together. Graduating students would see the tangible results of their efforts while the community saves a historic building and shelters an environmental non-profit.
